In trees with two or more main leaders, the potential exists for a weak or compromised crotch to develop. Many different factors can weaken a tree crotch, including water, animal nests, and wind. In such a circumstance, it may be possible to secure and strengthen the tree with a steel cable.
R&W Tree Experts offers two different sizes of cable: 3/8″ and 5/16″. The cable is secured with hooks going into each side of the tree. This does no long term damage to the tree and may serve as a preventative measure in the event of a storm. This may serve as an alternative option to removing a large section of the tree or the tree entirely.
In certain circumstances, it will be necessary to install more than one cable to properly secure a tree. Aesthetically, the cables are difficult to see. While cabling is no guarantee, it is a more affordable option and may preserve the life of your tree.
